According to a review released in the Journal of Intensive care, applying vitamin C to a patient in critical condition, can shorten the duration of mechanical ventilation.

To find monitored trials that had a look on the effect of vitamin C on the ventilation time on critical patients, Harri Hemilä (University of Helsinki) and Elizabeth Chalker, (University of Sydney,) managed a systematic literature search.

The duration of ventilation time, is decreased by 14 %, when vitamin C is administrated. That‘s what studies with (685 patients) including meta-analysis consult. There were remarkable differences showing between the different trials, but this fact can be explained by th duration of ventilation in the group that was not treated.

Cases of the most severe research patients withlonger ventilation periods, hat the strongest positive effect. Among 471 patients (in five trials) beeing ventilated for more than 10 hours, reached a cut by 25% on average, while taking high doses of Vitamin C.

„Given the strong evidence of benefit for more severely ill critical care patients along with the evidence of very low vitamin C levels in such patients, intensive care unit patients may benefit from the administration of vitamin C,“ – Hemilä in a recent statement.
